International Nitrocellulose Symposium

The International Nitrocellulose & Heat Flow Calorimetry Symposium

Tue, Sep 21, 2027 – Thu, Sep 23, 2027.

Washington, DC | USA

The International Nitrocellulose & Heat Flow Calorimetry Symposium brings together the world’s leading chemical scientists, engineers, safety experts, and industry executives specializing in the production, stabilization, and commercial application of nitrocellulose. Our delegation consists of approximately 100 high-profile professionals from global regulatory bodies, academic institutions, and defense, aerospace, and industrial manufacturing sectors. This 3-day event focuses on technical knowledge sharing, chemical safety protocols, and supply chain innovations. The conference is structured across three full, consecutive days and will be held in Washington, DC, USA in September 2027.

We are in the early stages of planning and only accepting call for sessions at this time. Our deadline for sessions/abstracts is January 29, 2027. We will open tickets and have further details in October 2026.

The International Nitrocellulose Symposium is a technical meeting, an informal and friendly forum for discussing all aspects of nitrocellulose supply, characterisation and ageing.  It started in 2001 and was originally an informal UK working group interested in nitrocellulose characterisation, particularly on molecular weight determination.  It has been sponsored and hosted by AWE, UK MOD, Cranfield University, Rheinmetall Nitrochemie, and TNO in subsequent years. The meeting has grown to a truly international meeting with 100+ delegates.

Previous themes have included: Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) Analysis • Chemical and physical characterisation • Chemical stability, ageing, and shell life • Cellulose supply • Nitrocellulose manufacturing, processing and supply • Propellant manufacture • Propellant ballistics • Disposal • International standardisation and national test methodologies (including updates on international round robins in support of STANAG 4178 ed2).
