Formulation is an area of significant potential for growth in the UK manufacturing sector.  The formulated products market, which includes coatings, home and personal care, food, agrichemicals and medicines, currently generates £180bn annual sales within the UK, and represents approximately one third of the GVA generated by the chemistry-using industries as a whole.   The global market is around £1000bn and growing.

Drivers for growth and innovation vary by sector; however overarching current trends include – growth in emerging global markets, demand for more sustainable living, an ageing population and continuity in materials supply.

Coupling this demand with consumer expectation that products will always be delivered faster with no compromise on quality, companies are starting to recognise that a significant shift to a more science-based approach to the formulation process is needed.  This step-change ability will inevitably occur, however strategic action is being taken in the UK to lead this change through collaboration across sectors, along supply chains and between diverse disciplines.   To this end, The TSB Formulation Special Interest Group was set up last year to trigger better coordination and knowledge transfer between the UK formulating industries, universities and government towards the common goal of the UK being the leading place to do formulation.

This day will showcase the technology, expertise and skills from UK companies and universities/RTOs and present how they are working together strategically with government to deliver value for UK plc.

The day is beng organsied by Chemical Innovation in partnership with the RSC Formulation Science and Technology Group and the IChemE Formulated Products Engineering Group.

Welcome to the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Formulation Science and Technology Interest Group Website.
